In 1917, George M. Cohan composed the song that more than any other would become the anthem for the First World War: “Over There.” Using the song’s title, Sterner depicts a somber, strong image of Columbia, sword in hand, beneath the billowing stars and stripes, and a sky filled with curls of smoke emanating from the ships of the Navy.
